Instruments You Can Use with Prodigies
Prodigies is designed to work with a wide range of instruments - from the deskbells we're best known for, to piano, recorder, ukulele, and even just your hands and voice. Here's a breakdown of every instrument option and what makes each one a great fit.
Deskbells (Our Recommended Instrument)
Deskbells are the instrument Prodigies was built around, and for good reason - they're the most accessible pitched instrument you can put in a child's hands.
Easiest pitched instrument to play: There's no technique barrier. Students simply tap the top of the bell to produce a clear, in-tune note - no tricking technique, finger placing, distracting keys.
Color-coded: Each bell matches our curriculum's color system (Do = red, Re = orange, Mi = yellow, etc.), so students can follow along visually from the very first lesson.
Perfect for isolating notes: Because each bell is a single note, teachers and parents can work on 1-note, 2-note, and 3-note studies before adding complexity - a huge advantage for early learners.
Great for adaptive learners: The physical simplicity of tapping a bell makes deskbells highly inclusive. Students with motor challenges, attention differences, or sensory sensitivities can participate fully alongside their peers.
Splitting up the bells: For younger group settings, you can provide each student with just one or two notes, in case you're spread thin on instruments.
Deskbells are available at prodigies.com/shop. If they're out of stock, the you can grab some off Amazon. Just be sure to get "Chroma-note" colored deskbells (i.e. note "Kidsplay" brand).
Boomwhackers
Boomwhackers are hollow, color-coded tubes that produce a pitched sound when tapped against a surface or your hand. They're a staple in group music settings, and they work seamlessly with Prodigies.
Our color system matches Boomwhacker colors, so if your classroom or co-op already has a set, you can jump right in without any adjustment.
They're especially fun in group settings where each student holds one or two notes and the class plays together as a chord or melody.
Boomwhackers follow along with any Prodigies lesson that uses deskbells, the visual color cues work the same way.
Xylophones & Glockenspiels
Mallet instruments like xylophones and glockenspiels are a natural fit for Prodigies, especially for students ready to progress beyond individual bells.
Prodigies offers color-matched mallet instruments that follow our curriculum colors, so students can read the color cues just like they do with deskbells.
Recommended for ages 5+. The mallet technique required for striking the correct bar, and controlling the rebound requires a bit more coordination than tapping a deskbell. It's a great next step when students are ready.
Builds hand-eye coordination: The larger layout of a xylophone or glockenspiel adds a spatial challenge that's developmentally valuable for older students.
Playing more advanced songs: a 25-note glockenspiel can be used for songs that use a wider range of notes, outside of our beginner-level, core 8 notes.
Have a standard silver or black-and-white keyed mallet instrument? You can use our piano stickers to color-code the keys and follow along with the curriculum.
Piano & Keyboard
Prodigies works great on piano and keyboard too, especially as students build a stronger musical foundation.
Use our color-coded piano stickers to label your keys so they match the Prodigies color system. Students can then follow along with any lesson visually.
Stickers are residue-free! So your keys are safe.
For families who already have a piano or keyboard at home, this is a low-cost way to get started immediately.
Our piano series has about 50 videos for beginners, but you can use a piano as a substitute for bells to follow our main chapters as well.
Solfege Hand Signs
In many Prodigies lessons we follow a Sing, Sign and Play approach where students sing the note name, make the corresponding hand sign, and then play the note on their instrument. But the hand signs are valuable on their own too.
Hand signs work great when:
You don't have an instrument yet (or are waiting for one to arrive)
You don't have enough instruments for every student in the room
You want to focus on voice and ear training on their own
Students need a break from their instruments

Why hand signs are so effective:
Inclusive for shy singers: The physical action of signing gives quieter students a way to participate actively without having to project their voice.
Activates both sides of the brain: The bilateral kinesthetic movement of hand signs engages both hemispheres simultaneously, which research suggests supports pitch retention and musical memory.
Reinforces pitch identity: Each note has a unique shape, so students are encoding pitch through sound, sight, and touch all at once.
Free Prodigies Bells App
No instrument? No problem. The Prodigies Bells app turns any phone or tablet into a playable bell set, and it's completely free.
Available on iOS and Android — search "Prodigies Bells" in the App Store or Google Play

Choose between an 8-bell layout (great for beginners) or a 25-note layout (for more advanced students)
Play single notes or chords
Includes a free pitch quiz to test and reinforce what students are learning
It's a perfect starting point before purchasing bells, a great backup on travel days, and a fun independent practice tool for older students.
Recorder
The recorder is everyone's favorite wind instrument, and Prodigies has a full dedicated program for it.
100+ video lessons covering recorder technique from the very beginning
Two books included with your membership to support the video lessons
Prodigies uses baroque (English) fingering - the standard fingering style used in most school music programs
Recorder lessons integrate the same color and solfege system students already know from the general music curriculum, so the transition is smooth
Ukulele
Prodigies has a full ukulele program, and it's a wonderful instrument for kids who are ready to take on chords and strumming.
We don't sell ukuleles directly, but a beginner soprano ukulele is all you need, they're affordable and widely available at any instrument retailer or online.
Look for a soprano size ukulele for younger students.
The Prodigies ukulele program builds on the musical foundation students develop in the general music curriculum. Plus you can always return to our performance track ("deskbell songs") and strum along to the chords above the staff.
Not Sure Where to Start?
If you're brand new, deskbells are the easiest entry point, they're what the core curriculum is designed around. If you're waiting for bells to arrive, start with the free Prodigies Bells app or just use hand signs. You don't need to wait to get started.
